Carl Heron completed the 50-mile Stanza Stones ultra on Saturday in an official time of 14.02:46. The inaugural race, from Marsden to Ilkley (2000 metres ascent) took in all six of the Stanza Stones, carved with poems by the poet laureate, Simon Armitage. Carl, who has not done anything longer than a half marathon since the Yorkshireman off-road marathon in September 2022, opted for a fast-walking pace with occasional jogging on the easy descents. In doing so, he managed to keep up with those who were running but with a slower walking pace.
The race started at 9am and a small group of runners took off at a fast pace with most of the field jogging or walking. The main checkpoints at Mytholmroyd, Haworth and Bingley were welcome and the marshals were helpful and supportive. The moorland routes were breezy and helped to keep the core temperature down. However, the valley floors were baking and the climb out of each one after 15-20 minutes of rest was tough. The last 15 miles to Ilkley was hard and darkness fell over the moor, making the descent tricky. I took on plenty of fluids throughout the day but struggled, really struggled, to eat anything after Mytholmroyd.
The race was won by Andy Collier in 9.20:43. The first woman, Claire Nance, finished in 10.16:55. The incessant heat took its toll on the small field with 19 withdrawals. Out of the 59 finishers, Carl was placed 25th and 2nd over 60. The race was organised by Cragg Runner and their staff did a brilliant job on the day. Would definitely recommend it for the amazing route, some of which was on terrain QRC folk know well.
