Karol and Phillip were near the Welsh coast this weekend. They started their Saturday by volunteering at Dolgellau parkrun, as parkwalker and Tail Walker respectively, followed by a bit of brunch.
In the afternoon, it was over to Tywyn for the Race the Train – an annual cross country running event organised by Tywyn Rotary Club, which attracts runners from all over the world.
For the main challenge, runners compete to beat a steam train on the preserved Talyllyn Railway over a distance of 14 miles; although only the elite runners stay ahead of the train for the full distance.
The terrain is a mix of roads, rough pasture, farm/sheep tracks, streams and a particularly muddy section – a bit like Winter League, but 9 miles longer!
Cheered on by Karol (and others!) from the carriages pulled by “Tom Rolt”, Phillip completed the course in 2:28:00 (chip time), and then it was chip time, with an Onion Bhaji Burger and salad.
